About Cinema in Podgorica: the back story
Podgorica’s film life is young and lively. Its best-known film event, UnderhillFest, began in the open air because the city had no suitable cinema hall at the time, and it still opens under the stars in Njegoš Park every June.
Documentaries under the stars
UnderhillFest, Podgorica’s international documentary film festival, held its first screenings outdoors because the city had no cinema hall suitable for its programme (Anna Lindh Foundation). It has grown every year since: the 17th edition ran from 9 to 17 June 2026, with 28 films in four selections, and opened on the basketball court in Njegoš Park in the city centre (FNE).
The Montenegrin Cinematheque
Founded in 2000 to collect and preserve Montenegrin films, the Montenegrin Cinematheque holds screenings, retrospectives and film weeks in its Gojko Kastratović hall on V Proleterske street (kinoteka.me).
UnderhillFest began in the open air because the city had no suitable cinema hall at the time.
Our tips
For the latest international releases, Cineplexx at the Big Fashion shopping centre on Cetinjski put is the city’s multiplex. In June, look out for UnderhillFest’s open-air evenings in Njegoš Park.
