About Five rivers: the back story

Podgorica is often called the city of five rivers. They gave it its first name, its fortress and its summer pleasures, and they still shape the way the city looks and lives.

The Morača

The largest of the five, the Morača flows down from the mountains through a deep canyon and cuts straight through the city in a rocky bed, its water a vivid green-blue.

The Ribnica

The little Ribnica gave the medieval town its first name. It joins the Morača below the Ottoman fortress, crossed by an old stone bridge.

On a hot July day, half of Podgorica seems to be down by the Morača.

The Zeta and Doclea

The Zeta flows down from Nikšić through the Bjelopavlići plain and meets the Morača just north of the city, where the Romans built Doclea.

The Cijevna

South-east of the city, the Cijevna spills over a broad ledge of rock in the waterfall known as Niagara, at its best in winter and spring. The Sitnica, the fifth river, is a small stream on the city’s edge.

Our advice: in summer, join the locals on the pebble beaches of the Morača, but swim only where others do. In spring, go and see the Niagara falls on the Cijevna in full flow.
