Podgorica rewards the curious. Montenegro’s capital sits where the Morača and Ribnica rivers meet, with a Roman city in the fields to the north, an Ottoman quarter by the water, a royal palace turned gallery in a riverside park and a modern skyline marked by a white cable-stayed bridge. Here is the story, and how to enjoy it.
Roman Doclea
Podgorica’s story begins a few kilometres north of the centre, on a plateau where the Zeta, Morača and Širalija rivers meet. Here lie the ruins of Doclea, which the Tourism Organisation of Podgorica calls the most significant ancient site in Montenegro.
Named after the Illyrian Docleati, the town became a Roman municipium in the 1st century AD, and it later gave its name to medieval Duklja. Today you can walk among the remains of its forum, basilicas, temples and baths in near solitude. Take a taxi, and bring water and a hat in summer.
In Podgorica, two thousand years of history fit into a short taxi ride: from the forum of Doclea to the cables of the Millennium Bridge.
The first excavations here were made in 1890–92 by Pavle Rovinski, and international teams still dig and survey the site each season, gradually revealing the plan of the Roman town. Doclea is on Montenegro’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status, and walking its empty streets, with the mountains all around, is one of the most atmospheric experiences in the country.
Before you go, visit the Museums and Galleries of Podgorica, which bring together the city museum, with finds from Doclea, costumes and the story of the city, and its galleries. It is the best introduction to the ruins.
Stara Varoš
Stara Varoš is the old Ottoman quarter, where Podgorica began as a trading town. It is small and quiet, but its lanes lead to the Sahat kula, the stone clock tower traditionally dated to the 17th century, to the Osmanagić and Starodoganjska mosques and down to the rivers.
Combine it with the old Ribnica bridge and the remains of the fortress where the two rivers meet. Our advice: come in the late afternoon, when the old stone warms in the sun, then cross the river for dinner in the centre.
Nearby, the Natural History Museum of Montenegro looks after the country’s collections of plants and animals, from the birds of Lake Skadar to the creatures of the Adriatic.
Bridges and the modern city
Much of central Podgorica was rebuilt in the second half of the 20th century, and the modern city has grown into a relaxed capital of wide boulevards, cafés and riverside walks. Its emblem is the Millennium Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge over the Morača with a single tall pylon and fanned cables, designed by Marjan Pipenbaher of the Slovenian firm Ponting with Mladen Ulićević and opened in 2005.
Walk across it at sunset, when the river glows below and the mountains turn pink, then take the pedestrian Moscow Bridge for views down the river. In summer, locals swim from the riverbanks below, so bring a towel when the heat is up.
On the other side of town, the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, built of stone in a traditional style and consecrated in 2013, glows inside with gold mosaics and frescoes. South of the city, Dajbabe Monastery, founded in 1897, is unusual: its church lies inside a natural cave, its walls painted by the monk who founded it.
Galleries, stage and screen
In the park of Kruševac, on the west bank of the Morača, stands the Petrović Palace, built for the royal family at the end of the 19th century and now a gallery of the Centre of Contemporary Art of Montenegro, with changing exhibitions. The old trees and quiet paths of the park make it a lovely place to linger.
Photography has its own address at Fotografska galerija f64, a small gallery with changing exhibitions of Montenegrin and international photographers.
The Montenegrin National Theatre, a short walk from Independence Square, is the country’s main stage, with Montenegrin and regional plays alongside world classics. For film, the Montenegrin Cinematheque, founded in 2000 to collect and preserve Montenegrin films, holds screenings in its Gojko Kastratović hall, including retrospectives and film weeks.
After dark, Ethno Jazz Club Sejdefa feels like a living room, with live Balkan jazz, blues, soul and indie on its small stage.
Njegoš and Cetinje
Montenegro’s cultural story leads up into the mountains. Njegoš, prince-bishop from 1830 until his death in 1851, was also the country’s finest poet. In the old royal capital of Cetinje, the Biljarda, built for him in 1838 and named after the billiard table he had carried up the mountain, is now a museum of his life and work.
His mausoleum crowns Jezerski Vrh in Lovćen National Park: 461 steps lead up through a tunnel to a granite hall designed by Ivan Meštrović, and to one of the great panoramas of the Balkans.
Cultural calendar
Summer is festival season. The 17th UnderhillFest, Podgorica’s festival of documentary film, ran from 9 to 17 June 2026 with 28 films in four programmes. Džada Film Fest brought open-air screenings to King’s Park from 31 August to 6 September 2026.
Always check the organisers’ and the Tourism Organisation of Podgorica’s websites before you travel: programmes and dates are announced there first.
What’s new
Podgorica’s calendar (checked October 2026): the Tourism Organisation of Podgorica publishes the city’s events calendar, from film festivals to the first Street Food festival, held from 18 to 20 September 2026.
Our advice: spend a morning at Doclea and the city museum, an afternoon in Stara Varoš and Kruševac Park, and an evening on the Millennium Bridge, then give a whole day to Cetinje and Lovćen.
